Breakfast Club Family Grants Programme - grants awarded!

As a result of the Blue Peter Mission Nutrition Appeal, ContinYou has awarded grants of £350 to  eighty breakfast clubs across the UK. The grants will enable an existing breakfast club to develop a sustainable family dimension – that will include creating an aspect of the breakfast club that will support children and families who are hard to reach or particularly vulnerable.

The grant programme is now closed.

Fags and peperami

A shock report reveals kids are spending £646 million on unhealthy breakfasts.

As part of National Breakfast Week (31 August to 6 September), Kellogg’s published a report on the breakfast habits of seven to fourteen year olds.

The report, entitled Fags and peperami, highlights that:

  • Kids are spending £646 million in a school year on ‘a junk food breakfast’ before school.
  • 1 in 30 14 year olds spend breakfast money on cigarettes.
  • 14% of kids pop into off-licences to buy food before school.
  • 16% of kids are routinely given ‘breakfast money’, almost half of which goes on unhealthy snacks (43%).
  • 24% of all 7 to 14 year olds regularly have cakes, biscuits, sweets, and chocolate for breakfast.
  • Half a million kids are eating biscuits for breakfast, 160,000 have a bag of crisps, and more than 100,000 are drinking fizzy drinks for breakfast.
  • 190,000 kids never eat anything at all for breakfast.

ContinYou says…
We welcome the findings of Kellogg’s report on kids’ breakfast habits, which clearly shows the importance of breakfast for children and young people’s health and well-being.
We look forward to our continued partnership work with Kellogg’s to support the development of sustainable breakfast clubs [link to BCP pages] in schools and communities. Breakfast clubs offer children and young people healthy food at the start of the day and as well as improving attainment  ‘… are proven to improve children’s behaviour, punctuality and attendance rates at school.’ Download the full report:
