Cymru Cooks in Vale of Glamorgan
Youngsters are cooking up all sorts of delicious dishes as part of a new initiative in Vale of Glamorgan schools.
The Cymru Cooks after school clubs are part of a two-year project funded by the Welsh Assembly and rolled out through ContinYou Cymru which promotes healthy eating and cooking among children and parents.
Eight of the clubs are now running across the Vale at The Bear Pac in Penarth, Hullaballoo, Gibbonsdown Children’s Centre, Nifty Kids and Oak Field Primary School in Barry, Sully, Gwenfo, and Llanfair. The clubs are supported, by a steering group, the Vale Healthy Schools scheme, Community Focused Schools and Clybiau Plant Cymru.
The Vale has been allocated cookery toolkits comprising kitchen utensils, pans, bowls and a dinner service, etc, for school and community use.
To mark the project's progress, a celebratory event was held at Barry Comprehensive School which included presentations by individual clubs and cookery workshops and demonstrations. Clubs were presented with certificates marking their attendance, by Jane Hutt, Minister for Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills.
Vale healthy schools co-ordinator Carol Maher said: "The fun event celebrated the success of the project and also allowed volunteers, parents and children to meet up and share ideas. It was marvellous to see the many examples of good work involving both children and parents."
