KidTribe and Hoop Hop
It’s more than a fitness program, it’s a movement!'
ContinYou has partnered with KidTribe, a US based organisation to develop and deliver Hoop Hop - a dynamic physical activity programme that combines hoola hooping and hip hop music. It’s therefore an ideal intervention tool to tackle obesity and many of the health inequalities as it also offers opportunities for young people and adults to develop their self esteem and confidence. Its founder Kellee McQuinn is nicknamed 'the Pied Piper with a Boom Box' by the LA Times and has been featured on PBS, Discovery Kids, TLC, ABC News in the US and by the BBC, Channel 4 and STV in the UK.
Hoop Hop
Founded in 2002 KidTribe has become an international obesity prevention, fitness and nutrition program for children and young people, evoking a new school of physical education with trend-setting activities, sweat-inducing curricular and cutting-edge approach. Designed to allow for individual, group and mass participation (regularly delivered to groups of 1,500 at a time!), it has been successfully delivered to over 950,000 children, young people and adults throughout the US and the UK.

With childhood obesity rates tripled in recent years, informal school and out of schools settings are the perfect platform to tackle this challenge to the nations health. As a great enrichment programme it understands its role in preventing and reversing this current health crisis and steps up to that challenge in a creative, innovative and measurable ways. Crucially our robust consultation with communities, schools, local authorities, parents and most importantly young people shows there is a need for an alternative and cool physical activity craze that those, who usually shy away from exercise, find engaging and challenging. As the young people explain in their own words… Let’s face it…
‘Come across a hoop, who can resist picking it up and having a go? Add some music, who can resist moving to it and composing healthy messages to go with it’
Hoop Hop also has the ability to traverse schools and their communities as well as be a fantastic intergenerational activity that enables families to engage in physical activity and have fun together. It also offers clear messages about healthy eating and social and emotional well being.
Recent delivery
In June and July 2009 the ContinYou/KidTribe partnership was commissioned by Middlesbrough Council’s Healthy Schools Team to deliver a Hoop Hop programme across the city. The programme involved building local capacity to run Hoop Hop activity in school and community settings through a whole day training event for 100 adults. We also supplied resources and hoops for 16 school and community settings in order that they could begin and continue to run Hoop Hop activity. The programme culminated in a major Hoophopalooza event for over 300 children and young people in Central Square, Middlesbrough on June 30.
