ContinYou's response to DCSF investment in cooking skills
ContinYou welcomes the additional Government investment in England for developing cooking skills. Through our successful programmes such as What's Cooking?, What's Cooking, Kids? and Cymru Cooks we are supporting schools' aspirations to develop opportunities for children and young people to learn and hone cooking skills that will be practical throughout their daily lives, while having fun. These programmes also offer possibilities to engage families and the local community.
This further injection of funding will especially support those schools who lack on site facilities to deliver cooking activity as well as build additional capacity to support programmes both in and outside curriculum hours. We look forward to engaging with schools and community groups who benefit from this timely offer of support.
About ContinYou's cookery programmes:
What's Cooking, Kids?
What’s Cooking, Kids? develops the learning of children aged 8 to 11 around healthy food, diet and nutrition. Building the first-ever network of Community and Young Food Leaders across the North East of England, this scheme offers endless possibilities to engage the local community and to learn skills that will be practical throughout the daily lives of children, while having fun! ContinYou, working in partnership with the Big lottery, Public Health North East, each of the 12 local authorities and the Strategic Health Authority in the region will establish more than 200 new food, cooking and healthy living focused groups.
Free training and funding are available to help each Community Food Leader to develop their What’s Cooking, Kids? clubs.

What’s Cooking?
What's Cooking? looks to use innovative and challenging ways in which to engage young people, their families and the wider community in the whole concept of food sourcing, preparation and healthy eating. The programme is aimed at young people aged 11 to 14 and helps young people to develop the food skills and knowledge identified in the Food Standards Agency’s Food Competencies. The Competencies Framework is presented in four themes: diet and health, consumer awareness, cooking (food preparation/handling skills) and food hygiene and safety.
