National excellence in supplementary education awards 2008

In a year where supplementary schools have been highlighted on government’s education agenda, ContinYou's National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education (NRC) took it upon itself to celebrate supplementary school excellence.

We are proud to announce the five winners of the National Excellence Awards 2008:

  • Birmingham Ishango Science Club
  • the Kurdish Children and Youth Centre
  • Leeds Chinese Community School
  • Leeds Community Mandarin School
  • Tallo Supplementary School and After School Club.

Judges also awarded special commendations to the Gheez Rite Saturday School and the Russian Saturday School.

Each winning and specially commended school excelled in one area of the Quality Framework:

  • teaching and learning
  • learning environment
  • governance
  • management.

The competition was extremely tough. On 4 April, we invited all shortlisted schools to an Awards Ceremony at the House of Lords, where they were treated to afternoon tea and a tour of the grounds.

A personal message from Lord Andrew Adonis to the winners was delivered on his behalf at the reception: 'For generations supplementary schools have provided invaluable extra education and support for children from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. Not only do they help young people with their mainstream school work, they also broaden their horizons, aspirations and opportunities. The winners of these awards have demonstrated real excellence in providing supplementary education.'
