Getting the best from major developments

What is it about?

Councils can get involved in extremely complicated discussions with developers when they are looking to redevelop or regenerate run-down parts of their area. This event is aimed at helping councils to understand the culture and aims of the developers, and to work with communities, to make the process smoother and more productive.

Who is it for?

The event is designed for councillors and council officers, some of whom will work together in the simulation as a 'Town Centre Working Party', while others take on the role of 'the developers', and a further group becomes 'the local community'. The ideal number of participants would be between 12-20.

What will participants learn from the exercise?

Participants will develop in an enjoyable way:

  • a better understanding of how to work with developers effectively
  • knowledge of the language and culture of developers and an understanding of how they may see the council
  • an awareness of the financial significance of time and what impact this has on risk and reputation
  • a clearer understanding of how development fits into the council's long-term vision
  • ideas about engaging with the community more effectively, and at the right time
  • a clearer understanding of how the failure to engage effectively with developers or the community can threaten a potential development.
  • recognise the investment choices facing developers and funders.

How much will it cost?

There are two options here:

Option 1 costs about £3,500 and includes:

  • a pre-discussion with trained facilitators
  • pre-session briefing materials for all participants
  • a fully facilitated session with three trained facilitators and a 'real' developer
  • a full day's simulation with plenary sessions and discussion
  • a report for members/officers after the event, with learning points.

Option 2 costs about £2,200 and includes the same as Option 1, except with one trained facilitator for the facilitated session. The local authority will supply two more facilitators. Some training would be provided by ContinYou.

Stop Press – the whole package has been completely revised over the winter of 2005/06 to ensure total compliance with the new Planning regime and has been checked by Planning Advisory Service with support from John Hack.

Signing up

To deliver the event locally, email Bill Malley or telephone 024 7658 8440.

A ContinYou consultant will contact you to arrange dates, and to discuss venues, catering, and other practical details. Pre-materials will be sent to you well in advance. A two-month lead time is suggested.

Once these details are finalised, you will need to advertise the event among councillors and officers (from all departments - legal, financial, planning, property, etc) and arrange catering and venue. ContinYou will offer guidance on these arrangements, if required.
