Community languages teaching and learning
Project introduction
The National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education, along with CILT (the National Centre for Languages), the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) and the School Development and Support Agency (SDSA) in Leicester are now embarking on a second phase of the 'Our Languages' DCSF-funded project aimed at supporting the teaching and learning of community languages within both supplementary and the mainstream school sector.
The project began in September 2007 in response to the need to raise the status of community languages in the curriculum as well as the need to recognise the work of the supplementray education sector in England.
Key objectives
- To provide support for community languages teaching
- To model good practice in teaching and learning
- To promote community cohesion
- To value plurilingualism
- To celebrate pupil achievement
These objectives feed into current government policies centred on the concepts of raising achievement and aspiration, building social capital, community cohesion, Every Child Matters, extended schools, parental engagement, and learner voice.
