Community cohesion

Community cohesion, as defined by the government's Neighbourhood Renewal Unit, aims to build communities in which all people from different backgrounds and circumstances:

  • have a common vision and a sense of belonging
  • value diversity
  • are offered similar life opportunities
  • experience strong and positive relationships - in workplaces, at schools and within neighbourhoods.

Primary and secondary schools now have a duty to foster community cohesion, and the community cohesion standards for schools recognise the contribution that supplementary schools can make to doing so.

The standards therefore require mainstream schools to conduct an audit of supplementary schools in their local areas.

The work of supplementary schools presents a further opportunity to create links between communities and facilitate cross-community events and projects.
