Diversity and citizenship

In 2007 the DfES – now Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) – commissioned a review of diversity and citizenship in the national curriculum.

The review, led by Sir Keith Ajegbo, highlighted the importance of creating active links between schools and their local communities – and also across communities.

With this in mind, the review recommended the involvement of supplementary schools in the planning of extended services and encouraged headteachers to open their doors to supplementary schools.

Supplementary schools can help schools develop a more inclusive and diverse curriculum, and can create links with schools' local communities, as well as between communities.
