Every Child Matters

The Every Child Matters (ECM) key outcomes were set out in the Children Act (2004) and constitute a new approach to the well-being of children and young people. All organisations involved in providing services to children should now work towards these aims.

The government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to:

  • be healthy
  • stay safe
  • enjoy and achieve
  • make a positive contribution
  • achieve economic well-being.

Supplementary schools contribute to all of the five ECM outcomes by, for example:

  1. offering sporting activities, cooking classes and delivering awareness-raising sessions, such as Healthy Share
  2. delivering personal safety messages and working with other agencies, such as the police, to raise awareness of safety issues
  3. offering alternative, more informal approaches to learning; preparing pupils for qualifications, such as GCSE and A-levels in community languages; offering pupils revision classes and support to improve their overall school results
  4. setting up peer mentoring and volunteering schemes for young people; delivering citizenship classes and encouraging pupils to get involved in their local communities and to make a positive contribution
  5. teaching leadership skills and other relevant learning skills that can be used in  mainstream classrooms and in the world of work; raising pupils’ aspirations and self-esteem, thus leading to better employment prospects.
