How can I get involved?
- Talk to the headteacher or the appropriate member of staff at your school and let them know your views on how extended services are developing in your school. Every parent has a right to be consulted and to voice their opinion in order to ensure that the services meet the needs of every child, young person and family.
- Identify the services and activities you would like to see provided for your child. Do they have an interest or skill which is not being developed within the school curriculum? Perhaps they would like to learn to play a musical instrument, or to take part in an after-school drama club, for example. Does your child need to access specialist support services or other professionals?
- Identify and inform the school about the activities you would like for yourself as a parent or carer. Do you need information about childcare, or help with applying for Working Families Tax Credit? Do you need formal or informal support with parenting? For example, would it help you to meet and talk with other parents, or would you like to join a more formal parenting course where difficult relationship issues can be explored in confidence? Would you enjoy the opportunity to take part in adult learning?
- Consider meeting other parents who are not so keen to be involved and supporting them in taking up the opportunities that will be offered in and around the school, or helping them shape the way in which services are offered so that they feel more comfortable. Perhaps your child has a friend whose family is new to the area and they could benefit from your support and knowledge.
- Explore the possibility of working with the school to help plan the activities for your own child and others. There may be parents’ committees, or action groups. There may be opportunities for parents to share their skills and run sports or arts activities, or to help with trips and visits.
