Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

Application deadline: The next deadline is 10 October.

Funding available: Up to £15,000

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is looking to provide grants to projects in the following areas:

  • Arts
  • Education
  • Social Change
  • Anglo-Portuguese Cultural Relations

The funding programmes include:

Arts in Public Spaces - The aim is to support high quality art in order to involve and inspire people living locally, particularly in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Human Scale Schools - This programme is designed to help secondary schools strengthen their commitment to human scale education.

Cross-cultural Schools and Youth Work Projects - Support is offered to secondary schools, and to those agencies who work with them, to encourage empathy and understanding between students from different cultures

Community Cash Awards

Funding available: Up to £1,000 is available for 14-16 year olds; up to £5,000 is available for those aged 16-25

Community Cash Awards are grants of up to £5,000 to help young people set up a project that will benefit their community.

UnLtd Sport Relief Awards

Application deadline: 1 October

Grants available: £250 to £5,000

UnLtd Sport Relief Awards provide opportunities for young people to bring communities together, to help them promote understanding and solve conflict through sport and recreational activities.

This UK wide funding programme is for 11-21 year olds, who are prepared to go the extra mile and use their passion for sport and other group activities to bring respect and understanding to their communities by setting up their own projects.

TalkTalk Innovation in the Community

Application deadline: 30 September 2008

Awards available: 30 x £2,000

TalkTalk Innovation in the Community Awards enables charity and community groups to harness the power of the Internet. 30 winners will receive cash grants to fund technology related projects, as well as technology equipment to help them make the most of the Internet.

This year the awards are divided into 5 categories:

  • Work and training
  • Play and sport
  • Learning and knowledge
  • Creativity and culture
  • Body and soul

The Lefevre Trust

Application deadline: 31 October 2008 for visits starting after 1 January 2009; 31 January 2009 for visits starting after 1 April 2009

Funding available: Up to £5,000 for one-way UK-France visits; up to £10,000 for reciprocal visits between France and the UK

The Lefevre Trust provides funding to support innovative projects between young people in France and the UK. It aims to improve understanding between the UK and France by enabling young people aged 11-19 to visit a partner group and further develop a joint venture.

Funding is available for groups of young people from across the UK and France. All groups are eligible to apply; youth groups, extra-curricular clubs, sports teams, school groups, theatre troupes, arts organisations and so on.

Coalfields Regeneration Trust

Application deadline: The project ends on 31 March 2011

Funding available: Bridging the Gap programme: £500 to £10,000; Main Grants programme: £10,001 to £300,000 in England, (or £10,001 to £100,000 in Scotland and Wales)

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is an independent grant-making organisation that aims to improve the quality of life in Britain’s coalfield communities.

The Trust is particularly keen to support projects that:

  • help people get back into work, such as information, advice and guidance services or work experience programmes
  • improve confidence and skills levels for people of all ages
  • encourage healthier lifestyles and participation in leisure activities
  • make access to community facilities and services easier for residents.

England Funding

Youth Funds

If you're between 13 and 19 years old and you want to see things improve in your neighbourhood, then Youth Funds are for you. There's £173m available over the next three years to create better activities for teenagers in England – and you can be part of it.There's also an extra £25 million up for grabs if you live in one of the 50 most deprived areas in the UK.

Youth Opportunity Fund money is usually awarded to the projects themselves and the money can be used to buy equipment.

Youth Capital Fund projects tend to be larger in size than YOF ones, and help to pay for the buildings and facilities that each project needs, as opposed to the cost of running a project.

Funding to Develop Media Skills for Disadvantaged Young People

Application deadline: 19 August

Grants available: £1,000 and £20,000

Mediabox is launching the Mid and Big Mediabox grants to make and distribute youth-led media projects that express young people’s ideas and views in a creative way, using their preferred media platform.

First Light Movies awards

First Light Movies funds and inspires film projects with five to 19-year-olds throughout the UK.

Grants are currently available through three funding schemes:

The studio awards

Application deadline: 14 October 2008

Funding available: Up to £30,000

For organisations experienced in collaborative filmmaking with young people, you can apply for funding to make between two and four short films

What's the Big Idea? Award

Application deadline:
16 September.

Funding available: Up to £3,000

Funding for script development projects that team young people with script professionals

Pilot Award

Application deadline: 16 September 2008

Funding available: Up to £5,000

Funding to make one short film of up to five minutes long.

V: Match Funding Scheme for Volunteering

Application deadline: Round 1 - 29 August 2008, Round 2 – 31 October 2008

Funding available: v will match any amount between £10,000 and £500,000

The v Match Fund brings together private sector partners and charities to create innovative volunteering opportunities. The v Match Fund matches up to 100% of any new investment in youth volunteering.

Community Spaces programme (run by Groundwork UK)

Application deadline: Community Spaces is open for applications for small and medium grants on a rolling basis up until January 2011.

Funding available: £10,000 to £49,999

This programme opened to applications on 19 March 2008. It funds community groups who want to improve local green spaces such as play areas, community gardens, parks, wildlife areas and village greens.

Local Food programme (run by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts)

Application deadline: For the Small and Main grants there are no deadlines, although all funded projects must be completed by March 2014.

Grants available: £2,000 to £300,000

Local Food funds a range of organisations who want to deliver a variety of food related projects to make locally grown food more accessible and affordable to local communities.

Good Food Training for London

Free training is available to increase the levels of healthy and sustainable food provided by public sector caterers. The courses are designed to suit all levels of skills, meeting your needs in areas such as:

  • local or organic procurement;
  • healthy eating guidance and nutrition  standards;
  • preparing and presenting healthy food;
  • incorporating seasonality into menus and ordering procedures;
  • waste minimisation and energy management.

Cash Back for Communities Fund – YouthLink Scotland

Application deadline: The closing date for applications for round 2 is 12 noon on the 26 September 2008.

Cash Back for Communities Fund aims to provide a wide range of positive activities for Scottish young people aged 10 and 19. CashBack For Communities helps local youth organisations provide free, local activities – like sports tournaments, shows, gigs, and dances.

The funding comes from money and goods seized from organised crime under the Scottish Government’s Proceeds of Crime initiative.

CashBack for Arts & Culture

Application deadline: Applications can be made any time.

Funding available: £1,000 - £40,000

£600,000 is available for youth dance, music, drama and other arts projects, as part of the Arts and Culture strand of 'CashBack. The fund, which will be administered by Arts and Business Scotland, will encourage Scottish businesses to match every £1 of government investment. This will effectively double the money and release a minimum of £1,200,000 over the next two years. The funds will be used to promote social inclusion through the arts for 'looked after' young people and young carers between the ages of 10 and 19 years.
