Share Plus

Share Plus is a programme that engages with parents through a trained facilitator. The materials are extremely flexible and can be adapted to use with parents of all age groups. The materials can be presented as a course of any length, used for workshops, seminars, parallel programmes during playschemes and even with individuals.

The programme includes training for facilitators, accreditation for parents and materials for both facilitators and parents. The materials deal with the issues that most concern parents, such as:

  • behaviour and development
  • bullying
  • personal safety
  • effective family communication

Any agency or voluntary group keen to support parents and their children's learning would benefit from the Share Plus programme:

  • schools, extended schools, Education Welfare Services and colleges
  • Sure Start, Sure Start Plus and Early Years projects
  • early intervention services and crime prevention schemes
  • agencies promoting lifelong learning and community-based learning
  • neighbourhood development organisations.

The benefits

The benefits of positive parenting extend from children and parents to the local community. Improved relationships and communication amongst family members lead to:

  • a positive attitude to learning for the whole family
  • an increase in confidence and skills
  • improved health and reduced stress
  • a reduction in truancy
  • a reduction in the numbers of young people being taken into care
  • an improvement in the family's ability to tackle the causes of disadvantage.

The materials

The materials can be adapted depending on the context in which they will be used. They could be used as a taster to engage parents, as a focus for an existing group or as an opportunity for parents to obtain accreditation by covering any of the five units. Produced by parenting practitioners, with practical feedback from parents, the materials use plain language and keep cultural diversity in mind.
