Page design overview

  • Left navigation panel: sub-menu for the current page. Where a page has no sub-menu, this shows the menu for the same level as the current page.
  • Centre content panel: page content appears in the centre panel.
  • Right related-information panels: for many pages we've identified other areas of the site that are relevant to the page you are viewing. This panel provides direct access to these pages.
  • Top-of-page links: appear on every page and include links to home, accessibility and help (this page).
  • Bottom-of-page links: appear on every page and include links to terms and conditions, accessibility, jargon buster, online donations, privacy policy, and accessibility statement.

Site highlights

  • Calendar of events: use our events calendar to discover upcoming events for your areas of work.
  • Resources: we continue to expand our collection of free resources. Project materials, research and evaluations can be found within the free resources page.
  • The terminology we use: visit the Jargon buster page to help familiarise yourself with the terms we use to describe it.
  • Easy to find content: use the Search feature to find key words within specific areas of the site.  Locate a page by viewing a structured list of linked page titles in the site map.

Locating programme information

The What we do section includes a link to the A-Z project list, which is a complete list of current projects, in alphabetical order. Note that project information is also accessible via the What we do areas of work pages.

Searching for words or phrases

When looking for specific words or phrases, the fastest way to access content is the site's search functionality.

Downloading documents

Many of the documents on our website are available in PDF format. To view these documents you need the Adobe Reader software. If you don't have Adobe Reader, download it for free from the Adobe website.

Some of the documents on our website are available in Microsoft Word format. If you don't have Microsoft Word, you can download OpenOffice.org for free from the website.

All downloadable files will open in a new browser window.

AccessibilityAccessibility

In developing our website we aimed to make it usable for the widest audience, including those with visual and motor disabilities. A text-only version of the site is available from the top-of-page utility links.

Accessibility and PDFs

Most of the downloadable documents on our website are in PDF format. However, not all browsers can support Adobe Reader (required to access PDF files), and some accessibility devices and software struggle to cope with this format.

Therefore, we are now developing our website to improve accessibility for people who use this technology, by providing alternative formats for all PDF files that are made available on the website from July 2006.

For more information about accessibility and the PDF format, please visit Adobe’s accessibility website. You may also like to use Adobe’s free online conversion tool, which converts PDF files into text or HTML.

In the meantime, if you come across a PDF file that you cannot access properly, please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate your needs by providing the file in an alternative format.

Accessibility and design

Our website has been designed so that the display options you choose in your browser or operating system will overwrite our settings. In this way you can increase the text size, change colours, or make other changes to the way our website looks.

To change the text size in most web browsers, simply hold down the "Control" (sometimes labelled "Ctrl") or the Command key on a Mac, and press the '+' key.

Visit the BBC’s My Web My Way website to learn how to make changes to the way the Internet is displayed on your computer.

Use the online feedback form to let us know how you use the new website, and what you like and don't like, as well as to send requests. As users of our projects, services and website, your feedback is invaluable and will be used to guide the site's development.
