How are we doing?

ContinYou  2005

£18

This toolkit offers schools practical guidance on evaluating their progress in developing extended services. The pack has two elements: the framework, which outlines a clear system for self-evaluation, and the audit tool, which consists of a set of eight audit sheets, each covering a different area of extended provision, plus a ninth sheet, where information from all eight areas can be brought together to give 'the big picture'.

I'm a better dad now

ContinYou 2005

This report, from the 'Supporting Young Dads' project, looks at ways of reaching young fathers, assessing their needs and overcoming some of the barriers that prevent them from gaining access to services. It highlights good practice and includes practical tools used in the project, which can be easily adapted for use in other contexts. It will interest anyone who commissions, manages, delivers or evaluates work with young fathers.

It's never too late!

CEDC 2003

Many older people have skills and knowledge that they would like to share with others. But they may not know how to go about doing this. This pack provides a course which is designed to support people over the age of 50 who would like to share their skills and knowledge with other people in their age group. The materials consist of a course tutors' handbook and a peer trainers' handbook. They cover the basics of preparation, delivery, assessment and evaluation.

Literacy links to health

CEDC 2001

£7.16

This publication offers a practical approach to tackling health inequalities through awareness of the basic skills needs of 20% of UK citizens. It summarises the evidence for the link between basic skills and health outcomes and draws upon the Literacy Links to Health Programme which took place in Harlow, Essex. It has been written for those who work in partnership organisations, who may wish to consider incorporating this kind of project into their work. In addition, there are recommendations for taking forward the debate about basic skills and health improvement at a national level.

Planning the commisioning of services

ContinYou 2004

£9

ContinYou has produced a practical toolkit to help community education providers, health trusts, regeneration partnerships, and others, develop a new approach to commissioning services. This is especially useful for those organisations wanting to ensure that, when they are planning service delivery, they take account of people from disadvantaged groups. It is also essential for those responsible for discharging Neighbourhood Renewal funding. People often need to acquire new skills in order to develop a commissioning approach. Working in this way can: change the relationship with service providers; result in provision that is better targeted; and allow a more strategic approach to be taken, so that initiatives on the ground have greater impact.

Schools plus to extended schools

ContinYou 2006

£18

This publication charts the success stories of schools that have developed their work with communities and made a positive difference to children and families. Each chapter tells a compelling story by a headteacher or local authority officer who has been involved in the agenda. The book pulls out important lessons for the future, and looks forward to further developments, as schools throughout England extend their services. It contains an extensive bibliography of research, websites and publications for those extending their services.

The story of the test bed ten

This report assesses the ten adult-learning projects that were piloted. It looks at what the schools and the adult learners gained from the opportunities that were offered. The experience and lessons learnt from these projects will be of use to anyone developing adult learning opportunities in schools.

Top dads

ContinYou 2005

£8.96

This toolkit provides advice on setting up and sustaining projects with young fathers, and is aimed at a range of organisations, including schools and children's centres, youth and voluntary organisations, community and parenting groups, and health and social care agencies. It draws on the experience of the five schemes that made up Young Fathers - a project commissioned by the Home Office and devised by the Trust for the Study of Adolescence. The project aimed to help fathers strengthen their relationships with their children by exploring their own attitudes as men and fathers, and by developing life skills and childcare skills.
