Lewisham
This project will tackle low attainment and low levels of parental engagement in education within some black and minority ethnic (BME) communities by partnering mainstream and supplementary schools.
The advisory group for the project is chaired by Professor Heidi Mirza, Director of the Centre for Rights, Equalities and Social Justice (CRESJ) at the Institute of Education and includes members from Lewisham’s Extended Services, School Improvement, Chidren’s Fund, CVS and Community Sector Unit.
The mainstream schools selected are Catford High School, Rushey Green Primary and Downderry Primary. They are working with the following supplementary schools: Mount Zion Foundation, Dr Fazil Kucuk Turkish School, Tamil Academy of Language and Arts, Rainbow Club and Young Muslim Academy.
Managers from four of the supplementary schools studied for and passed the OCN Effective Management in Supplementary Schools Level 2: Mount Zion, Pepys Supplementary, Rainbow Club and Young Muslim Academy.
Delegates from both the mainstream and supplementary schools took part in SHARE Plus training which will allow them to deliver bespoke parent support in their respective settings. Community Education Lewisham has agreed to fund ESOL and ICT classes for parents in Rainbow Club and Young Muslim Academy.
Further developments:
- A directory with details of over 50 Lewisham supplementary schools will be available online and in hard copy.
- Reciprocal visits and support from staff of both mainstream and supplementary schools.
- Transition sessions are planned for parents to give them further information on choosing a mainstream school for their children.
- 192mm Media Company will be helping the pupils create a DVD of their experiences to be used as learning resource for practitioners.
- The project will result in a detailed evaluation and a comprehensive toolkit for schools from both sectors to use.
Supplementary schools coordination service
The project will also provide a local supplementary school coordination service. This will involve managing and supporting a local supplementary schools’ forum, coordinating training and capacity building opportunities for those schools, supporting their applications for funding, and helping to raise their profile collectively within the borough.
Funding
'Raising achievement through partnership between supplementary and mainstream schools' is being delivered by ContinYou in collaboration with the London Borough of Lewisham.
The project forms part of the Government’s Connecting Communities Plus programme, and received funding through the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and Lewisham Children's Fund.
