Foreword
This set of materials has been developed by ContinYou Cymru and Governors
Wales to support governors, as key strategic leaders and managers, in developing
a Community Focused Schools approach in their schools. Each section covers
a different aspect of developing Community Focused Schools:
• 1: An introduction to Community Focused Schools;
• 2: Governors’ roles and responsibilities;
• 3: Managing Community Focused Schools;
• 4: Developing Community Focused Schools;
• 5: Self-evaluation and inspection;
• 6: What help is out there?
• Annexes: tools to support Community Focused Schools developments.
The information here is not intended to replace any guidance or direction from
the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) or Local Education Authorities (LEAs)
on developing Community Focused Schools. Rather, it is meant to give you
initial information, know-how and tools to develop a Community Focused Schools
approach in your schools.
In November 2006, ContinYou Cymru, WAG and the Association of Directors
of Education in Wales (ADEW) launched Community Focused Schools: Making
it Happen – a Toolkit. The toolkit has been developed to help everyone who
has an interest in making Community Focused Schools work. All LEAs in Wales
have had copies of the toolkit so that they can distribute one copy to each of
their schools. This set of materials builds on the information and tools in the
toolkit and each section signposts you to relevant sections of the toolkit. This
can be downloaded from either www.continyou.org.uk/cfstoolkit or
www.governorswales.org.uk.
These materials are ‘work in progress’, allowing for additional information to
be included as we progress along the Community Focused Schools continuum.
We are therefore keen to hear from you about what else you would find helpful
to have included. The materials also build on the successful Governors Wales
Summer 2007 Conference ‘Community Focused Schools’. They are intended
to address specific issues and challenges identified by school governors in
developing community focused services and activities.
