Berries for Breakfast

Breakfast clubs in the UK were invited to take part in the Berries for Breakfast campaign.

All they had to do was host a Berries for Breakfast day, share with us what they did, and how the children learnt about berries at breakfast, and then submit their entry to win great prizes.

For further information please contact berrybreakfast@continyou.org.uk or phone 0207 439 2780.

Please note that this competition has now ended. More information about winners will be available here shortly.

What was Berries for Breakfast?

Berries for Breakfast aimed to teach children more about berries as part of a healthy breakfast.

To help out, we prepared this fact sheet about berries and some breakfast ideas:

What the Berries for Breakfast entries needed to show

Berries for Breakfast entries needed to show how the children, young people or adults got involved and how berries were used at breakfast.

Along with a completed application form, clubs needed to send us evidence of their Berries for Breakfast day. The entry could have been a scrapbook, recipe book, poem, DVD, podcast or website. It didn't matter what form, as long as it clearly showed how berries were used on the day.

Applicants will be judged on:

  • the effectiveness of their breakfast club
  • showing an understanding of why berries and breakfast are good for you
  • demonstrating how they used berries on the day to promote behaviour change
  • how the club plans to ensure a wider school/community impact and legacy
  • the creativity of their entry.

Prizes

The winning club will receive:

  • £350 supermarket vouchers
  • two smoothie makers

Why are berries good for you?

  • Recent research found that a third (36%) of British children have never eaten a blueberry and less than 1 in 5 (18%) have eaten a raspberry. One in four has never eaten a blackberry.
  • Berries are a great way to encourage children to eat more fruit. Because they’re naturally sweet – children tend to enjoy eating them.
  • Berries are packed with vitamins, antioxidants and minerals so mums and dads can serve them knowing they not only taste good, but are healthy too. For example just seven strawberries gives 100% of your recommended daily vitamin C.
  • Berries can be sprinkled on cereal or made into colourful smoothies. For those with a little more time to spare, they’re delicious mixed in to pancakes.
