Listening Books

Listening Books is an audiobook library service for anyone that finds it difficult to read because of an illness, disability or learning difficulty such as dyslexia and other SENs. We are delighted to have recently received funding from a charitable trust to give away free memberships for our online service to people who live in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Membership to our library gives access to thousands of audiobooks available online to stream or download. As well as a large fiction library for children from the age of 7 upwards, we also support the National Curriculum by providing set texts and subject-specific guides.

Audiobooks can have huge benefits for those children struggling to read the written word, helping not only with their vocabulary, but also with communication and improving confidence in class. The range of titles we offer ensure children and young people with disabilities, illnesses or special educational needs are able to access the same books as their classmates. Our library caters for subjects such as Geography, Science, Maths and History, while our English and Drama catalogues offer the majority of set texts for GCSE including Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Hobson’s Choice by Harold Brighouse. We also stock the majority of Shakespeare plays and useful SmartPass and CGP study guides on audio.

Anyone interested in taking advantage of this offer who would find the charity’s membership fee a barrier to joining should get in touch with Jennifer Ades (tel: 020 7407 9417, email: jades@listening-books.org.uk). Upon joining the service members will be given a welcome pack with a username and password to access our website and information about how to use the service.
