Reviews and evaluations
Oldham Review
The Share programme was supported by Oldham Children’s Fund and On Track and was implemented at one of the three primary schools closely involved in the On Track programme. It was implemented in the On Track area in September 2003.
Research and Data Services Limited (RDS), an independent research company, was commissioned by Oldham Children’s Fund and On Track to examine the impact of the Share programme in 2004-05.
Key findings
- The programme positively affected parents' use of disciplinary strategies
- There were some impacts in parents' levels of language and literacy
- The programme raised parents' aspirations to support their child’s learning, but did not necessarily increase their ability to do so
- The programme had a positive impact on parents' involvement in their child’s education
- Regarding Every Child Matters (ECM), the programme had the greatest impact in the areas of 'make a positive contribution', and 'enjoy and achieve'.
The research found that the Share programme achieved what it set out to with those involved, and that it had a predominantly positive impact on those taking part.
An evaluation of Share at the Foundation Stage
Professor Iram Siraj-Blatchford, with Bet McCallum, Institute of Education, University of London
Share is a community development programme that is aimed at increasing parents' involvement with their children's education at home. The materials produced are intended to improve the quality of parents's involvement in their children's home education. Share also aims to advance pupils' learning while, at the same time, enhancing and recognising parents' skills and knowledge through an accreditation scheme.
In 2002, Share extended its work to include the Foundation Stage, and a pilot programme using newly developed materials was launched. The evaluation ran from October 2002 until March 2004.
