Specialist language colleges (SLC)
The aim of all language colleges is to: ‘raise standards of achievement and the quality of teaching and learning in … languages for all pupils’ and to ‘enhance language learning opportunities for their pupils and for their local learning community.’
As part of their bids to become a specialist language college, schools have to write a community plan, which audits the local community’s needs and links the activities of the college to the benefit of the local area.
Supplementary schools can be valuable partners for SLCs and can help them engage with local communities. Supplementary schools can also provide language teaching in partnership with colleges, and thus widen the language offer and take-up at Key stage 4.
