Youth Matters

This page may not reflect current government policy.

The key proposals of the Youth Matters Green Paper required children’s trusts, local authorities and the voluntary sector to work together to provide young people with ‘something to do, somewhere to go and someone to talk to’.

This included opportunities to contribute to their communities through: volunteering; recreational, cultural, sporting and enriching experiences; safe and enjoyable places in which to spend time. Supplementary schools also sometimes offer young people the opportunity to volunteer and organise events.

Supplementary schools offer young people ‘something to do, somewhere to go’ and very often ‘someone to talk to’ as well. These schools act as community hubs, where young people and their families come to socialise, learn and sometimes attend a place of worship. They offer young people opportunities to learn, and also to participate in play, sports and outdoor activities.

Often, the leaders and volunteers of supplementary schools are respected and valued by their pupils, who feel comfortable and safe when talking and sharing with them.
