Final guidance from Charity Commission's Faith Unit
New resources for faith-based charities have been published online from the Charity Commission's Faith and Social Cohesion Unit, which has now reached the end of its life. These include guidance on developing a governing document for faith-based groups preparing to register with the Commission, a pre-registration checklist, and three case studies of mosques demonstrating good governance. This evaluation looks at both the impact on the educational attainment of the children attending and also the wider impact on the families and communities concerned and the impact on the mainstream schools that the children attend.

In addition to demonstrating the importance of weekend study activities in raising educational achievement among disadvantaged and ethnic minority groups, the HWS pilot also provides insight into how supplementary schools can form an integral part of authorities’ educational support programmes and extended services.

Partnerships in language and culture: a toolkit for complementary and mainstream schools working in collaboration, CILT 2009

Covers the benefits of partnerships for out-of-school-hours and family learning opportunities, including raising achievement, developing community cohesion and personalised learning. Also offers advice on how to start, maintain and develop a partnership and how to develop assessment and accreditation for learning in community settings.

This report from the Confederation of British Industry sets out what makes young people most employable, highlights the importance of linguistic proficiency in another language and its capacity to help build business relationships around the world. It also emphasises the importance of international cultural awareness, communication and literacy - all of which are skills that can be gained through studying a language.
